You are one step closer to loving your skin, so let’s get started!
Create Your Ultimate Facial Acid Skincare Strategy
1. Importance of Patch Testing
Before embarking on your journey to radiant skin through the power of facial acids, it’s imperative to lay down a solid foundation for a safe and effective skincare routine. The first step on this path is conducting a patch test—an indispensable precautionary measure. Safeguard your skin’s well-being by applying a minute amount of the chosen facial acid to a discreet area, allowing you to observe any potential adverse reactions or allergies. This simple yet pivotal test acts as a protective shield, shielding you from unexpected irritations or discomfort that may arise.
2. Professional Guidance
While the wealth of information in this article serves as a compass on your journey to radiant skin, it’s important to remember that every individual’s skin is as unique as a fingerprint. Before you embark on your personalized skincare odyssey with facial acids, consider enlisting the expertise of a dermatologist or skincare professional. Their specialized knowledge can be a guiding light, illuminating the path toward a regimen tailored to your specific skin type, concerns, and any pre-existing conditions.
3. pH Levels and Acid Effectiveness
Think of pH levels in skincare like the secret sauce that makes things work perfectly. They’re like the GPS guiding your skincare products to the right destination – your skin. When pH levels are just right, it’s like opening a magic door for the good stuff to sink in and do its job. It’s as simple as using the right key for a lock. So, picking products with the perfect pH is like giving your skin a VIP pass to all the benefits. It’s like adding an extra boost to your skincare routine, making sure you get the best results for that awesome glow.
4. Precautions for Sensitive Skin
For those with skin that’s a bit like a delicate flower, using facial acids requires a special kind of TLC. Think of it as a gentle approach to skincare, where you’re treading softly to achieve that coveted glow. Starting with lower concentrations of acids is like dipping your toes in the water before diving in. It’s about giving your skin time to get acquainted without overwhelming it. Using acids less often is like taking it slow in a dance – you want your skin to lead and set the pace.
And just like a caring partner, being attentive to any signs of irritation is crucial. Listen to what your skin is saying – if it’s giving you red flags like redness or discomfort, it’s time to hit pause and switch gears. By following these steps, you’re crafting a skincare routine that’s like a soothing lullaby for your sensitive skin, promising a radiant melody without any harsh notes.
5. Combination Therapy
Mixing different facial acids is like creating a perfect blend of ingredients that work together for amazing results. It’s a bit like being a skilled chef in the kitchen – you pick the right flavors to make a delicious dish. For your skin, think of it as a special recipe where each acid plays a specific role. For instance, salicylic acid is like the superhero tackling acne, while lactic acid acts as a gentle exfoliator for an overall brighter look. When these two join forces, it’s like magic happening on your skin. It’s as if they team up to solve different skin concerns, making your skin happier and healthier. So, just like mixing colors on a palette creates a beautiful painting, combining these facial acids creates a wonderful skincare routine that helps you glow inside out.
6. The Role of Moisturization
Keeping your skin well-hydrated is like giving it a cozy blanket to snuggle in while it enjoys the benefits of facial acids. Imagine it as a tag team – facial acids work their magic, and hydration steps in to keep everything comfortable. Just as you’d drink water to stay refreshed, your skin needs moisturization to stay happy. It’s like a protective shield that prevents dryness and irritation, which sometimes show up when you’re using acids. Think of moisturization as your skin’s best friend, helping it shine without any discomfort. Together, they create a fantastic duo, making sure your skin stays radiant and cheerful. So, like a perfect dance partnership, let your facial acids and moisturization routine waltz together, ensuring your skin steals the show with its glowing brilliance.
7. Time of Day and Layering
Let’s talk about when and how to use different acids in your skincare routine. Think of it as a strategic plan to give your skin the best treatment at the right time. Exfoliating acids, for example, work like night owls – they’re most effective when used in the evening. This way, they can focus on renewing your skin while you sleep. As for layering, imagine it as building a strong foundation for a house. Start with your exfoliating acid as the base layer, then add serums to target specific concerns, and finally, lock it all in with a moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated. This sequence ensures that each product can do its job without interrupting the other. So, by following these steps, you’re basically creating a roadmap for your skin’s journey to a radiant and healthy complexion.
8. Incorporating Antioxidants
Here’s a smart move for your skincare routine: consider adding antioxidant-rich products, like vitamin C serums, to the mix. It’s like giving your skin an extra shield against the elements. Just as you’d take a vitamin to boost your overall health, vitamin C does the same for your skin. It’s like a superhero that fights off the bad guys, in this case, harmful environmental stuff. By teaming up antioxidants with facial acids, you’re creating a dream team that not only helps your skin stay protected but also takes its health to a whole new level. It’s like getting a bonus feature in your skincare routine – one that keeps your skin glowing, vibrant, and ready to face whatever comes its way.
9. Lifestyle Factors
Here’s a big secret to achieving and keeping that radiant skin: it’s not just about the creams and serums. Lifestyle stuff matters too, like what you eat, how much water you drink, and how you handle stress. It’s like taking care of your skin from the inside out. Imagine your skin as a plant – you need to give it the right nutrients (aka good food), enough water, and a stress-free environment. When you focus on these things along with your skincare products, it’s like giving your skin a double dose of love. So, remember, a holistic approach means looking at the bigger picture – it’s like the missing piece of the puzzle for that gorgeous, glowing skin you’re after.
10. Long-Term Consistency
Here’s the thing about skincare: it’s a bit like working out or learning a new skill – you need to stick with it to see results. So, if you’re diving into the world of facial acids, don’t expect an overnight miracle. It’s more like a slow and steady race. Think of it as planting a seed that takes time to grow into a beautiful flower. Just like you wouldn’t become a master pianist after one lesson, your skin won’t transform instantly either. Consistency is the secret sauce that makes the magic happen. Keep at it, even if you don’t see big changes right away. It’s like building a strong foundation that sets the stage for lasting improvements. So, hang in there, be patient, and keep up with your routine – your skin will thank you for it in the long run with a radiant and refreshed look that’s totally worth the wait.
Wondering how to layer facial acids in your skincare routine? We’ve got that covered for you!
Combining acids may cause skin irritation. But since everyone’s skin is different, the combination could be safe and even beneficial for some, especially if you have oily skin.
The key to layering acids comes down to pH levels, a scale of measure that tells you how acidic a product is. You want to start with the product with a lower pH and finish with the one with a higher pH. If you use a product that raises your skin’s pH first, the product with the lower pH will have to work to bring that number down instead of working on improving your skin, so it won’t be as effective.
If you do notice any redness, sensitivity, or excessive dryness, try alternating use, i.e. using AHAs one day and BHAs the next.
Keep in mind that if you are using AHAs and BHAs and you throw vitamin C into the mix can be a recipe for irritation. Similarly, you can alternate usage; you shouldn’t use acids every day anyway – two to three times per week is recommended.
Also, facial acids may increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun and particularly the possibility of sunburn. Use sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and limit sun exposure while using this product and for a week afterward. It will be best to avoid using AHAs and BHAs during the summer season!

Add Nutrients For A Healthy And Glowing Skin
Niacinamide
The benefits of Niacinamide, aka vitamin B3, are seemingly endless when applied to the skin. This antioxidant will aid in eliminating acne because it is anti-inflammatory and prevents blemishes by attacking the sebum and dead skin cells that clog pores and trigger outbreaks.
Niacinamide is also an anti-aging acid that encourages collagen production and moisture (even oily skin types – oily skin does not equal hydrated skin!) which we all need for a healthy glow. Last but not least, this derivative of niacin fades discoloration and hyperpigmentation.
Our recommendation is The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%, with a high 10% concentration of this vitamin supported in the formula by zinc salt of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid to balance visible aspects of sebum activity.
The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%
Apply to the entire face morning and evening before heavier creams. Contraindications: If topical Vitamin C is used as part of skincare, it should be applied at alternate times with this formula (ideally Vitamin C in the PM and this formula in the AM). Otherwise, Niacinamide can affect the integrity of Vitamin C.
Peptides
Peptides act as signaling mechanisms that tell the body to produce more collagen. Here’s the biggest pro when it comes to peptides: Pretty much anyone and everyone can use them.
The Ordinary “Buffet”, a Multi-Technology Peptide Serum, combines a comprehensive array of studied technologies to target multiple signs of aging at once. You can apply it to the entire face in the AM and PM after cleaning.
Best Facial Acids For Glowing Skin
Salicylic Acid
When it comes to treating acne, acids will work to deeply exfoliate the skin and keep your pores clear. The superstar is salicylic acid, a type of BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid). You can find it in lots of products and is known as a powerful chemical exfoliant. This is because its molecular structure makes it more easily absorbed by the skin, meaning it can penetrate deeper into pores, breaking down pore-clogging particles and supporting healthy cell turnover. This makes it a great option for blackheads and whiteheads, which are the direct result of clogged pores.
Salicylic acid is also highly anti-inflammatory and works miracles in calming down red, inflamed, and “angry” skin. It’s also perfect for anyone who suffers from breakouts due to the potent acne-fighting properties that make it an ingredient in many of the best acne treatments.
Our favorite product is The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2%!
The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2%
Apply this product once a day ( max twice a day), preferably in the evening after thoroughly cleansing and toning. Using a cotton pad, gently massage over the face, making sure to avoid the eye area. You need to use a 50+ SPF cream at all times during the day as it increases the sun sensitivity of your skin. Try to find a cream with a light texture that suits your skin type.
Glycolic Acid
Glycolic acid is the holy grail of exfoliation, effectively removing the outermost layer of dead skin cells, revealing a brighter and glowing complexion. It is also effective in treating and preventing acne, fading dark spots, evening out skin tone, and reducing fine lines.
Basically, it’s a superstar acid that will not only reduce breakouts but even out skin tone and texture. We love The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution!
The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution
Use ideally in the PM, no more frequently than once per day. After cleaning, saturate a cotton pad with the formula and sweep across the face and neck. Avoid the eye contour and contact with the eyes. Do not rinse off. Continue with additional skin treatments as needed.
Sunburn Alert: This product contains an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that may increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun and particularly the possibility of sunburn. Use sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and limit sun exposure while using this product and for a week afterward.
Lactic Acid
Lactic acid is another AHA often used as a skin exfoliant, minus the irritation. It is gentler than glycolic acid and helps hydrate the skin while more effectively treating sun damage. It also helps stimulate collagen production, which can help smooth out wrinkles and fine lines.
Products with lactic acid will often produce a lighter skin tone. This is precisely why it’s wonderful for combating hyperpigmentation, dark patches, and spots.
The Ordinary Lactic Acid 10% + Ha 2% 30ml is the product you are looking for!
The Ordinary Lactic Acid 10% + Ha 2% 30ml
Apply once per day, ideally in the PM. Avoid contact with eyes. Contact of the product with the skin must be of limited frequency or duration.
Sunburn Alert: Use sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and limit sun exposure while using this product and for a week afterward.
Hyaluronic Acid
The best facial acid for softer and smoother skin—with less fine lines and chronic dry patches is hyaluronic acid.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a substance found naturally in our skin that holds water and helps keep it hydrated and plump. The ingredient should be a cornerstone of any anti-aging routine. Hyaluronic acid plays well with most other ingredients and can be paired with peels, retinol, vitamins, and other acids.
Picking the right hyaluronic acid product is tricky, but you can trust our recommendation The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5, and give this product a try!
The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5
Offering the heroic hydrating properties of hyaluronic acid – with an extraordinarily low price tag – this oil-free treatment penetrates deep into the skin’s layers to deliver intense, long-lasting moisture that swiftly smooths and perfectly plumps. Enhanced with a boost of vitamin B5 to increase efficacy, this lightweight serum will leave skin softened and strengthened.
Apply a few drops to the face in the morning and evening before the cream.
